Room Reservation Policy Reminder

As the end of classes draws near and studying for exams begins, here is reminder regarding the Room Reservation Policy.  Groups of two or more students may reserve one room in advance for one three hour block of time per day.  The names of at least two group members must be legibly printed on the reservation sheet.

Reservations will be held for fifteen minutes before the room reservation is canceled.  Room keys will be held for fifteen minutes to accommodate patrons who need to briefly leave the library.  Room keys may be renewed for an additional three hour block if the room has not been reserved for another group and no other patron is waiting for a room.

Justice Thurgood Marshall

Justice Thurgood Marshall served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1967 - 1991.  Prior to serving on the Court, he was counsel for the NAACP, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and a U.S. solicitor general.  Of interest in the Law Library’s collection is Supreme Justice: Speeches and Writings: Thurgood Marshall edited by J. Clay Smith, Jr. (KF213. M37 S87 2003).  This is a compilation of his public presentations, writings, speeches, and interviews spanning over seven decades from the 1930s to the early 1990s.  Books authored by noted constitutional law scholar Mark V. Tushnet about Thurgood Marshall include Making Civil Rights Law: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court, 1936 - 1961 (KF4775 .T87 1994) and Making Constitutional Law: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court, 1961 - 1991 (KF8745 .M34 T87 1997).

To locate additional titles on Justice Marshall available in the Law Library’s collection, search the Library WebCatalog by subject: Marshall, Thurgood.

Justice Scalia

For those who listened to Justice Antonin Scalia’s April 7 talk at which he expressed his judicial philosophy, you might want to read his book A Matter of Interpretation: Federal Courts and the Law: an Essay (KF4552. S28 1997).  In addition to his 1997 book, Justice Scalia has a new book scheduled for release the end of this month and he will be appearing on a segment of “60 Minutes” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/08/ap/
supremecourt/main4002104.shtml?source=search_story to promote it.

The title of Justice Scalia’s forthcoming book is Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges and it is co-authored by legal writing expert Bryan A. Garner.  Read more about this collaboration at http://www.abajournal.com/ news/justice_scalia_teams_with_writing_expert_for_book.  Here is a link http://www.lawprose.org/supreme_court.php to the recordings of the interviews of eight of the nine Justices conducted by Bryan Garner in preparation for this book.

Papers!

It’s getting to be that time of year, paper time!  Fortunately, the Legal Beagle does not have to write papers! But if you have a paper to research, do not hesitate to ask the Reference Librarian on duty at the Reference Desk for help with locating materials.  If you need a book or journal article that is not in the Law Library’s collection (print and electronic) nor at the undergraduate library, you can obtain it through interlibrary loan.  Forms for requesting an interlibrary loan are available at the Circulation Desk.  Thelma Dzialo, who processes the interlibrary loan requests (and owns Samantha, a black lab mix), can answer any questions you might have about your request.

If the item is at the undergraduate library, simply take a stroll (among Legal Beagle’s favorite activities) and ask the staff person at the Circulation Desk to add your name to their list of patrons and then you can check out books for 30 days.  Make sure you have your law school ID to show them.

“Supreme Semester!”

As this is the “Supreme” semester here at the School of Law, the Legal Beagle searched the Law Library’s WebCatalog (with assistance) to find some interesting resources on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Here are three recent books of interest: Justices, Presidents, and Senators: A History of the U.S. Supreme Court Appointments from Washington to Bush II by Henry Abraham (KF8742 .A72 2008); The Supreme Court: An Essential History by Peter Hoffer et al. (KF8742 .H64 2007); and, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court by Jeffrey Toobin (KF8748 .T66 2007).

If you have some time, watch the series The Supreme Court (four volume DVD set, Reserve, KF8742 .S77 2007).  The series, which aired on PBS in 2007, traces the history and the influence of the Court.  For details about The Supreme Court, go to http://www.pbs.org/wnet/supremecourt.
Supreme Court DVD set

To locate more titles on the U.S. Supreme Court, search the WebCatalog by the subjects United States Supreme Court, United States Supreme Court Biography, and United States Supreme Court History.  As the Law Library’s collection contains almost 300 publications about the U.S. Supreme Court, you can limit your search to a particular year of publication and of course, to your favorite “Supreme.”
