The Undertaking of an Exciting Adventure
In the coming months I will be embarking on an exciting adventure, a new journey; one which will surely afford me the opportunity to defeat the bigotry of any challenges that may dare to hover over my success.
I will be handling cases, pro bono, in representing Special Education students in educational legal matters as part of a newly developed project between the Law School and the Rhode Island Disability Law Center. Although I will be working under the supervision of a licensed attorney all matters of my cases will be handled by me independently.
Friends, for me this will not be an easy adventure at all. However, I am convinced that I have made the right decision. I accepted to take part in this project because I am extremely passionate about these issues. As a person with a visual impairment, I have witnessed and experienced first hand the bitter taste of discrimination and blatant injustice in the hands of certain sectors of society. It is because of these experiences that I have accepted to contribute to this noble cause. I believe I can make a difference, and I will.
I have promised to myself that I will be a negotiator, but I will not accept to negotiate anything at the expense of the future of these students. I have fought similar battles on the front-line - alone - and it will now be time for me to employ every tool in my arsenal to help these students realize a more promising future.
Wish me luck!
