My Perspective on Obtaining a Legal Education
When I started law school just a year ago my impression of a legal education was that it was either undoable, or outright impossible. I thought, based on the comments and stories, that to be successful one had to have been in possession of a set of innate traits not just any learned abilities. In retrospect, this impression I had demonstrates the exaggeration in the limitless comments I was bombarded with from various sectors of the legal profession. These comments unfortunately portrayed Law School, for the most part, as an impossible endeavor. Yet, to the contrary, my experiences have taught me differently. I now want to share my experiences with those who are craving the satisfying taste of a legal education.
The question I often received is something like this: “is law school difficult?” The answer is a resounding yes. “Is it impossible?” the answer is emphatically, no. So, what’s the fuss?
As one scholar observed, pursuing to an unknown destination is nothing more than an adventure. However, journeying to a known destination is called traveling. Thus, the success of a legal education is solely dependent on whether its architect is an adventurer or a traveler. In other words, if one approaches the study of law as an adventure, there is no question that he/she will fail. However, if one approaches the experience as an act of traveling, then he/she will surely prosper.
By accepting to pursue a legal education one should expect to read and write a lot more than most other professions. This is just the rule of the game. The hours will appear longer, and the work will seem insurmountable. Likewise, one should be organized, diligent, and attentive to details, as these are also traits of the game. But, one does not need to be a superman in order to be successful in law school.
Law school is tough and fun. In fact, when it is pursued with a little passion law school is an excellent endeavor. Do not allow anyone to elect fear in your quest to enjoy such a satisfying experience. Once again, it is a lot of fun!
