Introduction

Wow! I can hardly believe how fast these past few years of law school have flown by.  I can actually recall my thoughts on the second day of school almost as if it were yesterday: I had got up at about six o’clock in morning to do the reading because I was just so busy moving into my new apartment and trying to attend all of the introductory functions on that first day. I remember thinking that since my first class that day wasn’t until almost noon, I would have no problem getting through the first assignment for Property I.  However, after I had been reading for almost three hours I realized that I was not even half way done, and to make things even worse, I had absolutely no idea what the cases meant or why they were important. I felt like I was reading a foreign language—I was forced to look up just about every other word in this gigantic legal dictionary. After I had finally finished the assignment almost five hours later (just a few minutes before class), I looked at the notes that I had taken and all I remember thinking is why, why I am reading about two guys, who were chasing a fox through the woods almost 200 years ago.  Just as I thought my day could not get any worse, I ended up getting called on in our first Property class, I’ll spare you the details but it was pretty painful.  I walked out of class that day thinking there is no way I am getting through law school, these people must be smarter than me, this was just a big mistake, and I better submit my refund paperwork before its too late. Well, as you can see, I decided to stick with it and thanks to the encouragement of the Dean, my family and friends, and a whole lot of will power I managed to finish the first year at the top of the class. And while these past few years have been pretty tough and quite stressful at times, I will tell you that the experience has truly been a positive and rewarding one.

Currently, I am in my final semester here at Roger Williams University (“RWU”) and in just a few short months I will take the bar exam and begin getting ready for life outside of school. So, before I begin the next chapter of my life, I agreed to take a little time each week to discuss my experience here at RWU, including the many opportunities that I have taken advantage of over the course of my law school career. As the only law school in RI, RWU School of Law is able to offer a unique array of clinical and externship opportunities, many of which I have engaged in. So rather than just focusing solely on my experience in my final semester, which entails taking a lot of classes (in preparation for work and the bar exam), I figured I would reflect back on and share with you some thoughts regarding the many opportunities that I have experienced here. I hope this Blog will be useful for those of you who are considering whether to attend RWU School of Law.
