Alumna named 2009 Woman of the Year

imageDr. Lynn Ewart-Paine ‘05 was named a 2009 Woman of the Year by the Rhode Island Commission on Women (RICW).  She is the Deputy Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport.  The award recognizes “influential women in Rhode Island who demonstrate a history of individual achievement or who have made lasting and positive contributions in the community to help elevate the presence of women and improve the quality of life for women in the state.”

A 2005 graduate from the School of Law, Lynn has garnered an international reputation for her expertise on transduction materials since her arrival at the NUWC in 1996.  Dr. Paul Lefebvre, Division Newport’s Technical Director, stated that “[Ewart-Paine’s] career has been marked by swift advancement, making novel scientific discoveries and leading engineers and scientists in research to support the Navy’s sensor and sonar technology.”

The Commander of NUWC Division Newport, Captain Michael Byman indicated that “[a]s Deputy CTO, Ewart-Paine serves as a senior advisor to NUWC Headquarters and to the NUWC Division Newport leadership team for science and technology issues” where she “ensures that the strategic direction, technical vision and related research and development efforts are properly aligned with the command’s mission, and those of the larger Navy and defense community.” Ewart-Paine emphasized in the Naval War Center’s press release that she “could not have been nominated or selected for this honor without the supportive work environment of NUWC Division Newport,” and “[she] owe[d] a great deal to those [she] work[s] with and the leadership here.”

Congratulations Lynn!
