The Supreme Semester at RWU
The spring ’08 semester is going to be supreme, with many unique opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to learn about the workings of the United States Supreme Court first-hand. Here are just some of the confirmed events:
• “Should the Supreme Court Be Conservative?” A debate between two national figures in the battle to shape the ideological makeup of the Court, Nan Aron (president of the D.C.-based Alliance for Justice) and Ron Cass, a noted conservative spokesman and Dean Emeritus of Boston University School of Law.
• A tour of legal Washington: a section of Honors students visits the Court to hear arguments, meet with Justice Alito, as well as the advocates themselves- members of the staff of the Office of the Solicitor General.
• Weighing in from the Ivory Tower: Professors Carl Bogus and Jared Goldstein authoring amicus briefs in two high visibility cases (gun control and punitive damages from the Exxon Valdez crash).
• The Fourth Thurgood Marshall Lecture, featuring leading critical race theorist Devon Carbado (UCLA), and, once again, a visit from Mrs. Thurgood Marshall.
• “A Glimpse Inside the Supreme Court,” the Commencement address delivered by Linda Greenhouse, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of the Court for the New York Times.
Keep checking this blog in coming weeks to find out about several other blockbuster announcements that will make spring ‘08 such a “supreme semester.”
