RWU Staffer Joins in Fight to Stop Violence against Women

One of the remarkable people on the RWU Law team is Kim Baker, who serves as our Writing Specialist.  Besides being a published poet, Kim is also a committed women’s rights activist.  Here is a dispatch from Kim, who helped out with “V-Day 2008-New Orleans.”

New Orleans Superdome.  Where New Orleans residents sought refuge from Hurricane Katrina.  Where many women of New Orleans were beaten, raped, and murdered while there for shelter.  Women who vowed never to step foot into the Superdome again.  But on April 11 and 12, 2008, thousands of those women did return.  To be loved.  To be healed.  Welcome to V Day 2008!

In early April, I traveled to NOLA to volunteer at V to the 10th, the tenth anniversary of V Day, a non-profit organization created by Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, to raise money to end violence against women and girls around the world.  My job was assistant to the volunteer coordinator.  Women and men traveled to New Orleans from every corner of the planet to offer two days of events and healing services to those who survived Katrina.  Doctors.  Massage therapists.  Mental health counselors.  Yogis.  Make-up artists.  Hair dressers.  Celebrity stars.  Moms and daughters.  Writing specialists!
