RWU Law Students Nab Internal, External Scholarship Awards

I am delighted to announce the names of two RWU Law students whose excellence in research and writing earned them special recognition, as well as cash awards.

Melissa McGow (’10) has been named the winner of the Lillian and Irving Topf Memorial Prize, awarded to the student deemed to have authored the best appellate brief of the entire first year class; this year’s problem focused on the admissibility of a confession coerced by a private party.  The award comes from the generosity of Mel Topf (‘05), who endowed a fund in memory of his parents.

Jim Ward (’09) received national recognition, winning the law student component of a competition sponsored by the Pacific Legal Foundation, a libertarian think tank.  Jim’s submission, “When Rents of Certain Owners Are Controlled by Local Governments, Does This Constitute a Regulatory Taking?” was the top paper in a seminar on “Property Takings,” taught by-longtime Adjunct Professor Mike Rubin.  The award yielded not just recognition, but an award of $5,000.

Congratulations to Melissa and Jim!
