Distinguished Jurist and Lawyers Join RWU Law Board of Directors

At its October meeting, the RWU Law Board of Directors unanimously nominated five outstanding practitioners and one highly-regarded judge for positions on the Board and I am delighted to report that they have all accepted. The new Board members are:

• The Honorable Edward Clifton (JD, UCLA), has served as Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court since 1993. Justice Clifton has served on the RWU Law Board of Advisors and is active in the mentoring of RWU Law students through a program co-sponsored by the Thurgood Marshall Law Society

• Michael Field (JD Roger Williams, class of 1997), is Special Assistant Attorney General. An expert on First Amendment and open-government matters, he served on the Roger Williams Law Review. He was an early President of the RWU Law Alumni Association

• Linn Freedman (JD Loyola-New Orleans) is a partner at Nixon Peabody LLP. Ms. Freedman served as Deputy Chief of the Civil Division under Rhode Island Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse, and was deeply involved in the state’s path breaking litigation against the lead paint industry

• Constance Howes (JD Virginia) is President and Chief Executive Officer of Women and Infants Hospital , one of the nation’s leading specialty hospitals for women and newborns

• Mark Mandell (JD Georgetown) past president of RI Bar Association and American Trial Lawyers Association, is nationally known for his work in catastrophic personal injury litigation and medical malpractice

• Joseph Whelan (JD Fordham) is a partner at Hinckley, Allen & Snyder, focusing on labor and employment law. For more than a decade, Mr. Whelan has been a member of the RWU Law Adjunct faculty.

David Logan has served as Dean at Roger Williams School of Law since 2003. A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Dean Logan clerked for a federal judge and practiced with a major Washington, D.C. law firm where he represented Native American tribes. He was a member of the faculty of Wake Forest University School of Law from 1981 - 2003, where he won awards for his teaching of Torts, Media Law, and Professional Responsibility. His publications, focusing on the intersection of Tort law and the First Amendment, have appeared in major journals, including the Michigan Law Review and the Virginia Law Review.

He is a frequent commentator on legal issues, having appeared on tv (The O’Reilly Factor, Fox News, NBC Evening News, and Nightline), radio (Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Marketplace), and print media (Time, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post).

He was born in New York City and grew up in the DC area. He earned his BA from Bucknell, MA from Wisconsin-Madison, and JD from Virginia. In college, he was a varsity basketball player, head dj on the campus radio station, and a music critic for Rolling Stone.
