Prof. Gutoff Opines on Pirates
It is surprising that one of the most difficult legal and military issues of the eighteenth century is back, with increasingly brazen pirates capturing and ransoming ships off the coast of Africa. It just so happens that a member of the RWU Law faculty, Professor Jonathan Gutoff, a popular teacher in our Maritime Affairs Institute, is an expert on piracy. Prof. Gutoff has written about the topic in scholarly journals (eg., “The Law of Piracy in Popular Culture,” which appeared in the Journal of Maritime Law & Commerce), and been on panels on the topic at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Law Schools. He has also commented on the recent events in the National Law Journal.
