RWU Law Helps Create and is Featured in LGBT Applicant Resource
This year the Law School Admissions Council published a new version of its brochure “Out and In: Information for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Law School Applicants,” a resource for LGBT applicants trying to find a law school that is a good fit. Members of the RWU Law community played key roles in bringing this brochure to fruition.
Michael Boylen, our Assistant Dean for Admissions, serves on the Law School Admission Council’s LGBT Issues Subcommittee and helped redesign the brochure for a new generation of applicants who have witnessed the great strides the LGBT community has made in recent years.
The Alliance, the RWU Law student organization for members of the LGBT community and allies, was one of a number of national LGBT organizations participating in focus groups that helped shape the new direction of this resource.
Also, the final product features a number of pictures of Cara Hall, an ’08 graduate, and Mary Sarigumba, a current RWU Law 2L. Cara and Mary tell their stories and offer their advice for maneuvering the application process and finding a comfortable law school environment.
Finally, the brochure lists five indicia of LGBT friendliness at various law schools: having Sexual Orientation listed in our non-discrimination policy, have an LGBT student organization, having openly LGBT faculty, having openly LGBT administration, offer LGBT specific courses, and offer domestic partnership benefits. Each school identifies which criteria it meets and I am proud to report RWU Law meets all of the factors.
