Alum’s story becomes Hollywood film

Betty Anne Waters , a 1998 graduate of Roger Williams University School of Law, was an unemployed single mother of two, and younger sister to Kenneth Waters, a man who began serving a life sentence in 1983 for murder and robbery. Convinced that he was innocent, Waters spent the next 12 years working her way through college and then obtaining a law degree to represent him.  After passing the bar exam, she became a lawyer at age 40 and focused on her brother’s case.  A blood sample nearly two decades old would be the answer.  The DNA evidence was used to overturn his conviction and after spending 19 years in prison, Kenneth walked out a free man in March 2001.

The popularity of this inspirational story has evolved into a movie based on Betty Anne Waters and the steps it took to set her brother free. The part of Waters will be portrayed by Hilary Swank.
